Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Wooden spoon or silicone spatula
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • knife
  • Cutting board
  • Glass jar or airtight container

Ingredients

  • cups water
  • ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ cup coarsely chopped onion
  • cup granulated sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • cups ketchup
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
  • ¼ teaspoon ground red pepper cayenne
  • 3 tablespoons yellow mustard about 3/16 cup
  • cup apple cider vinegar

Instructions

Step 1:

  • Combine the water, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, chopped onion, sugar, black pepper, ground red pepper, yellow mustard, apple cider vinegar, butter, and lemon juice in a medium saucepan. Stir everything together until well mixed.

Step 2:

  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer while stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 3:

  • Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20–25 minutes. Stir every few minutes until the onions become soft and the sauce thickens slightly.

Step 4:

  • For a smooth barbecue sauce, carefully blend the mixture using an immersion blender or regular blender. If preferred, strain the sauce through a fine mesh sieve to remove the onion pieces.

Step 5:

  • Return the blended sauce to the saucepan for 2–3 minutes, stirring gently to ensure a smooth consistency. Taste and adjust with a little extra lemon juice or sugar if desired.

Step 6:

  • Remove from the heat and let the sauce cool completely. Transfer it to a clean glass jar or airtight container and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving for the best flavor.
