Equipment

  • Large saucepan or Dutch oven
  • Wooden spoon
  • Cutting board
  • Sharp knife
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Blender or immersion blender

Ingredients

  • 4 cups whole peeled tomatoes crushed by hand (or chopped fresh tomatoes)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup finely chopped onion
  • 4 garlic cloves minced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • ¼ cup fresh basil chopped
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh oregano
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon sugar optional, to balance acidity

Instructions

Step 1:

  • Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook for about 5 to 6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

Step 2:

  • Pour the crushed tomatoes into the pan and stir well. Add the salt, black pepper, and sugar if using. Mix everything together until evenly combined.

Step 3:

  • Add the chopped basil, oregano, and parsley. Stir well, then reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer gently for 30 to 35 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.

Step 4:

  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed. If you prefer a smoother consistency, blend the sauce with an immersion blender or transfer it carefully to a blender before returning it to the pan.

Step 5:

  • Serve the sauce immediately over your favorite pasta, spread it on pizza, layer it into lasagna, or store it for later. Garnish with extra fresh basil if desired.
