Whole30 BBQ Sauce

Julia
Whole30 BBQ sauce is a healthy homemade sauce made from clean and natural ingredients. I love the rich smoky taste and smooth texture this sauce brings to grilled chicken, ribs, burgers, and roasted vegetables.

  • 1 can tomato paste 6 oz / 170 g
  • 1/4 cup apple juice 60 ml / 65 g
  • 1/2 cup water 120 ml / 120 g
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 15 ml / 15 g
  • 1/4 cup coconut aminos 60 ml / 70 g
  • 1 teaspoon salt 5 g
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder 1 g
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder 1 g
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons yellow mustard 7 g
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder 3 g
  • 4 Medjool dates pitted (about 60 g)

Instructions

  • Step 1: Add the tomato paste, apple juice, water, apple cider vinegar, and coconut aminos to a medium saucepan. Stir until the mixture becomes smooth.
  • Step 2: Add the salt, onion powder, chili powder, yellow mustard, and garlic powder. Mix well to evenly combine the seasonings.
  • Step 3: Roughly chop the pitted dates and add them to the saucepan. This will naturally sweeten the sauce without refined sugar.
  • Step 4: Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. Cook for about 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until the dates soften.
  • Step 5: Remove the saucepan from the heat. Carefully transfer the mixture to a blender or food processor and blend until completely smooth and creamy.
  • Step 6: Allow the BBQ sauce to cool before serving. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

Notes

Notes: For a smoky flavor, add 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika. If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in extra water 1 tablespoon at a time.Blend longer for an extra smooth texture. This sauce works well as a marinade, dipping sauce, or burger topping.
